What is energy?
Energy is among the most universal concepts in physics, appearing across mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum theory, and beyond. Yet despite its extraordinary mathematical and explanatory reach, what energy is remains remarkably difficult to state unequivocally.
Research programme
The research examines the concepts, assumptions, and inherited modes of explanation through which energy has come to be understood.
It investigates:
- definitions and conceptual roles of energy within physics;
- the historical development of the concept;
- its etymological and genealogical development;
- relationships between physical meanings and wider technical, political, economic, philosophical, and everyday uses of the term.
Methodological position
The inquiry combines conceptual analysis of physics with historical, etymological, and genealogical investigation.
Its purpose is not to challenge experimentally established physical results, but to distinguish those results from conceptual interpretations and explanatory structures that have developed around them.
